The baton (also called the stick of command) is a protocol complement that denotes in the person who carries it, authority or command over a group or collective identity.

Its historical antecedents start in the first civilizations, and historically they reach our days.

In the case of the City Councils there are two direct personalities who use batons, in the case of the Mayor and the Lieutenant of the Mayor.
